The Challenge
After a battery fire destroyed its recycling facility, Rumpke needed a proactive solution to detect hazardous materials—especially lithium-ion batteries—before they caused thermal events.
Traditional manual sorting wasn’t enough.
The Solution
Rumpke partnered with Visia's Field Engineering team to deploy an Visia's AI-powered X-ray system on their pre-sort line, tailored specifically to Rumpke's facility layout and operational flow.
Visia's X-ray systems use Artificial Intelligence to automatically identify instances of material non-conformance like batteries and gas tanks, even through dense volumes of mixed material. A mounted laser pointer alerts sorters to the exact location of flagged items for safe and accurate removal.
Real-Time Insight
Rumpke’s operations team now accesses real-time material composition data through Visia’s dashboard, replacing manual audits with continuous insight.
The system learns and improves over time, adapting to Rumpke’s evolving material stream.
